while i do not completely agree with you, getting a mentor is ofcourse recommended, but the scenario in india for mentorship is yet in its nascent stage.

Feedback from manager also might not work out for the best because your boss is interested in your well being only until you climb a ladder after he has got his promotion.

The best thing to do is attend conferences and network with like minded people who occupy higher positions. 

Attend conferences like TiE summit etc and network with people your boss envies.

Remember, to get work done from someone, you need to be in good terms with his boss.
